I grew up in New London, Minnesota, population 873. Our house was set back in the woods and I spent endless amounts of time out in the forest amongst the wildlife, and many friend's farms. I loved all living things, but nothing as much as dogs. Our family ‘D’ encyclopedia fell open to ‘dogs’ when set on its spine. I could draw a picture of every breed pictured on those pages, to this day! Every report I had to do, every book I had to read… you get the idea. :) Dogs dogs dogs.
After graduating from high school, I was determined to head to the ‘big city’ of Minneapolis-St. Paul. I attended the University of St. Thomas and got my Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration Business and a minor in Psychology.
Following graduation, again feeling the need to venture beyond my small town roots, I continued serving in a restaurant and saving money in order to spend two months traveling Western Europe. Upon my return, it was time to move to the next big city, Chicago.
Here, I bounced around a bit trying to find something I felt passionate about, spending a couple of years at an advertising agency (J. Walter Thompson) then a couple of years at a real estate investment company (Tishman Speyer Properties). While working downtown all these years, I myself had a dog walker for my own dog, the one and only, Miss Ducky…
Then it struck me! I want to spend my day with my dog, and as many dogs as possible! I did actually spend two months interviewing with and exploring the idea of the veterinary work within the vet hospitals in the area. I even spent some time shadowing at a few of them, and received some job offers but nope, getting outside, out there dog walking, and daily pet care, was the way to go for me. No doubt about it.
So I quit my job with all kinds of support from my fantastic co-workers. I took a job serving once again to make ends meet while I got it up and running, and 6 months later I had built Girl Meets Dog.
Still being a small town girl, that loves to be outdoors (I spent my youth forever outside in MINNESOTA), loves to play sports (from pee wee baseball with all the boys, to football with my brother and his friends, to volleyball, basketball, captaing of the golf team in high school…), to get dirty (still a tomboy!), and beyond adores dogs, it’s simply a match made in heaven. On top of that, I’ve always worked hard (I actually attended college full time my last year of high school) I have a business degree (from a school with a particularly challenging business program) to assist me through all of the aspects of starting and running my own business.
I pride myself on having found what I feel is the perfect balance between being that loving kind pet care taker, while still beind a business professional. This is also why I keep only a small team to work wtih me. Any walkers that I even considet joining us, is interiewed, tested (written, and interacting with numberous current clients) and trained by me, and everyone else on the team, before starting out on their own.
So here we are! It all started in 2002. I love what I do. We love every one of our ‘kids’ and we develop such an amazing bond with each of them over our time together. I look forward to meeting you and yours!
